Documents of the Women's Liberation Movement

Online archival collection from Duke University Special Collections Library focuses on the radical origins of this movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Items range from radical theoretical writings to humourous plays to the minutes of an actual grassroots group. Browse by subject or do a keyword search and link to scanned images of the original documents. Excellent primary sources.

Marxist Internet Archive

MIA offers full text documents of many Marxist thinkers. Includes links to Marxist history, Marxist writers, Reference Writers (writers "relevant to understanding the concepts of Marxism"), subject archive and encyclopedia of Marxism. Many primary texts from famous (and little known) Marxists are available full text, with commentary. Excellent resource.

Field guide to alternative media

(1984) A print directory to reference and selection tools useful in accessing small and alternative press publications and independently produced media, although it is a little outdated.

WorldCat
The online union catalog of worldwide library holdings can be searched by subject, author, title, report numbers, ISBN or ISSN, publisher, place of publication, etc. The database includes monographs, serial titles, computer files and programs, films, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, slides, sound recordings and videotapes. Requires proxy.

AK Press

AK Press is a collective of writers whose goal is to "make available the radical books and other materials published independently, not by corporate giants, with which you can make a positive change in the world. This is a bookseller, and will generally be most useful in searching for books you already know about but can't seem to find anywhere.

The Alternative Press Index

(1969-present) Produced by the Alternative Press Center in Baltimore, API is a quarterly subject index to over 250 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines. Topical articles report and analyze the practices and theories of cultural, economic, political, and social change. API indexes such important periodicals as: Cineaste, Environmental Action, Socialist Review, and Women's Review of Books. Resouce is available in USF Periodicals.

Underground Newspaper Microfilm Collection

(1963-1983) Contains underground press titles published in the U.S., Canada, and foreign countries. Accompanied by a print index entitled Underground newspaper microfilm collection : table of contents. There is one copy in reference and one in the Periodicals Microform Room (also called the REEL GUIDE).

Arts and Letters Daily

“An updated report of news and reviews”:online collection of articles, current news, essay and opinion. Includes many links to columnists, news services, journals and magazines, radion, book reviews, e-zines,etc. Updated weekly but availibility of material changes as other sites update. Old material is moved to archives, which are available from 1999-2001.

ZNet.org

(1997-2000) "A community of people committed to social change", Znet is the web counterpart to the print periodical Z Magazine. Click "Z Mag" at top of the page for a free searchable database of Z Mag's 800 archived full-text articles. Contributors include Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky.

An online directory to to selected publications currently indexed in the Alternative Press Index & members of the Independent Press Association. Free online guide to independent critical press: information includes: updated publication information, addresses, frequency, subscription pricing contacts, editors, and occaisionally a link to a website. Browsing is available by subject and alphabetically by title.

Jay’s Leftist and ‘Progressive’ Internet Resources Directory

“A Web Portal for all Good People around Planet Earth who are anti-War, anti-Imperialist, anti-Racist, anti-Sexist, and anti-Homophobic and who want to Resist Oppression and build together a Better World.” Personal site packed with current information concerning the left. Search engine available, but didn’t work too well. Best information available on menu at the top of the screen. Choose "The Directory" for an alphabetical list of progressive sites online. Other links include: current news, media center directory, radical history, full text articles on variety of issues, “Suppressed News Stories”. Updated daily.

InfoShop.org

“Anarchy and anarchism on the web? Infoshop.org has lots of information of interest to anarchists, anti-authoritarians, and other activists." Use this directory for online information about anarchism and related topics. Links include Anarchist FAQ, Current Events, Projects/Organizations, Resistance Movements, Anarchist references and resources. Visit Infoshop and put some anarchy into your life today.

Newpages Alternatives in Print and Media

The “Portal of Independents!” Provides weblog, book reviews, guests columns, and indexes to independent booksellers, literary periodicals, alternative periodicals, university presses and independent record labels. Very clean pages, easy to navigate. Click under 'NewPages Guides' for links to many resources.

Civic Media Center and Library

A non corporate media center in Gainesville, Fl. The CMC is supported by donations and community volunteers, and community groups in Gainesville. Carrying books, journals, 'zines, videotapes, audio tapes, and newspapers by independent, non-corporate press on a wide variety of subjects, their material is only available at the center itself, though they have an online search for their materials (be prepared for lots of list reading!) Home page includes calendar of events, while the Links page contains lists to activist news, radio stations, equipment supply, commercial media, and much more.

Indymedia

Originally established to provide grassroots coverage in many formats for the WTO Seattle protests in 1999, the IMC has been documenting and uploading coverage of the anti-corporate globalization movement ever since. Site includes news and current events on international scope, offers search engine for articles, pictures, and audio excerpts in several languages. They also have several documentaries of protests in downloadable format. The good place to go when looking for radical, activist information from the activist point of view.

Institute for Anarchist Studies

The IAS is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. Founded in 1996, it offers $8,000 annually in grants to support the development of anarchism. Primarily a grant-giving organization for radical writers. Links page provides detailed and international listing of book sellers and publishers of anarchist works. Also includes other anarchy websites.

Stone Soup Collective

A Central Florida infoshop and community space, this non-profit organization out of Orlando, FL "operates a radical free space for individuals and community groups to organize, meet, fund raise, hold events, artistically expess themselves and learn about information and issues not covered by mainstream media sources."
